St. Ben’s memorial service for the homeless celebrates and remembers

On Tuesday, April 17th, 2012, St. Ben’s Church held its seventh annual Memorial Service for the Homeless, a chance for members of Milwaukee’s homeless community and staff from St. Ben’s Clinic to pay their respects to those homeless individuals and caregivers who lost their lives this past year.

The mood was light as attendees slowly filed in – more reminiscent of a wedding reception than a memorial service. The mid-afternoon sun blazed through the stained glass windows and as Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” played on a loop over the PA system, the 90 or so people in attendance huddled in small groups chatting, hugging, laughing. But once Bill Mullooly, a social worker at St. Ben’s Clinic, stepped to the podium and the music faded out, things turned somber.
