Columbia St. Mary's Regional Burn Center provides unmatched care to survivors

May 28, 1994. 8,500 gallons of gasoline. A split second when something goes wrong. A tanker rolls over and bursts into flames on a slow turn on Milwaukee’s Highway 45.

Bill Ester recalls the accident in amazing detail. “My initial thought was ‘This is how it ends.’ But survival is a very strong instinct. I jumped out a window and, thank goodness, ‘stop, drop and roll’ had been beat into me as a kid.”

Paramedics transported Bill to Columbia St. Mary’s Regional Burn Center where he began the long process of recovering from traumatic third-degree burns – the most severe kind – that covered more than 60 percent of his body. It was a grueling two years of surgeries, therapy and hard work before Bill’s doctors deemed him “healed.” But what he gained through that process are insights and lessons that have guided his life ever since.

Saying Goodbye to the Daughters of Charity

It was winter of 1846 when three sisters came from Emmitsburg, Maryland. Traveling by boat, the sisters braved howling winds and the treacherous frozen waters of Lake Michigan. Within 90 days of arriving they started a school, an orphanage and a hospital – the first hospital in Wisconsin. They brought a new approach to medical treatment and a new approach to care, one dedicated to helping all people, regardless of race, religion or nationality.

For 164 years, the Daughters of Charity have been a guiding light, leading and supporting the mission of Columbia St. Mary’s. Sadly, their presence in Milwaukee is coming to an end.
