Lung Cancer

Multidisciplinary Cancer CareRick and Kathy Wolff meeting with Dr. Swanson

Our team of Lung Cancer experts focus on diagnosing and treating patients quickly and effectively. Our focus on mind, body and spirit in treating the whole patient, is evident in our team’s special attention to quality of life and minimizing side effects while eliminating cancer.

Because cancer patients form relationships with multiple physicians as they begin their journey into survivorship, we work to make this process as simple as possible. We bring all the experts, physicians, nurses, support people and other caregivers together to enhance communication among providers. This strengthens the patient’s role as a true member of the Team that is making decisions about the treatment plan.

Early Detection

In 2011, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) changed their screening recommendations for Lung Cancer screening to included recommending helical low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for select patients who are high risk. Talk to one of our pulmonologists about your risk and eligibility for screening.

Additionally, Dr. Burak Gurses, a pulmonologist at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s, is a leading proponent of the Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS). This relatively new, minimally invasive procedure is used in the diagnosis of lung cancer and offers many benefits over the traditional diagnostic procedure.

EBUS differs from traditional lung cancer diagnostics in that it allows real-time images of the lungs, lymph nodes, blood vessels and airways. It allows physicians more control and greater access to harder-to-reach areas. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and patients generally go home the same day.
