During Treatment

It is important to consume a variety of foods to give your body the nutrients it needs to fight cancer throughout your treatment plan. Consider the following nutrients:

Protein helps grow and repair body tissues and keeps the immune system healthy.

  • Sources: fish, poultry, lean red meats, eggs, low-fat dairy products, nuts and nut butters, dried beans, peas, lentils and soy foods

Fats provide energy for the body, insulates body tissues and transports fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K.

  • Sources: healthy monosaturated fats (olive, canola and peanut oils) and polyunsaturated fats (safflower, sunflower, corn and flaxseed oils)

Carbohydrates are the body's major source of energy for physical activity and organ function.

  • Sources: fruits, vegetables, potatoes, corn, peas, beans and whole grain breads, cereals, pastas and brown rice

It is vitally important to stay hydrated. Most doctors recommend the average adult drink six to eight glasses of water a day.
